Presentation
The narrator is spending Whitsun weekend in Saint Malo with his family : his two sons and his wife who is expecting twins. He is working on a book on Flaubert, recounting the author's journey through Brittany with Maxime du Camp. On Whit Monday night, his wife prematurely goes into labour. The second twin dies. The first, named Gaston, is hospitalized in the neonatal care unit of Rouen. As Gaston fights for his life, the narrator feels Gustave's presence near him, compelling him to face the mystery of the beginnings. Gaston and Gustave (Flaubert) are linked, closely entwined, skin to skin.
This book recounts a harrowing experience, interspersed with the tale of an initiatory journey through fields and shores in Flaubert's footsteps.
