Mercurio

Presentation
The narrator and his companion Almano live in Paris. They have known Mercurio for more than 25 years. Or rather, they think they’ve known him… They met him on a cruising place, and have become attached to this boy who is much younger than they are. Mercurio is an enigmatic boy: by turns a gigolo, a film actor, a romantic, shy or provocative, depending on the situation. Above all, he has the annoying habit of disappearing from one day to the next, only to reappear as if nothing had happened months or even years later!
This time, when Mercurio resurfaces after another absence, he announces that he has cancer and that his days are numbered. The narrator and his companion are there to support him through this ordeal. However, with the help of disturbing clues, fortuitous cross-checks, chance occurrences and coincidences, they begin to have doubts. What if it’s all a lie? What if everything has always been a fool’s game? Mythomaniac, usurper, liar, impostor, brilliantly gifted forger or pathetically alone, who is Mercurio really?
Philippe Mezescaze is the author of several novels, among which Deux Garçons (2014), Les jours voyous (2020) and L’insouciance (2022). His novel L’impureté d’Irène was adapted into a motion picture by Nicolas Giraud (Du soleil dans mes yeux, 2018).
