Presentation
In this sensitive self-portrait, Fabrice Gabriel recounts his initiation into life through cinema and offers us a kind of sentimental education. From his childhood in Lorraine to Paris, New York and Berlin, it was his experience of cinema since the 1970s that shaped him. At the Central cinema in Sarreguemines, which no longer exists, he experienced his greatest emotions watching films from America, Germany, Italy…
Reliving the precise moment of the first times, when the boundary between what we saw on screen (westerns, cult films and lesser-known films) and real life became blurred, the echo of one in the other; saying what we remember: the face of an actress, the weather when we left the cinema, the film we saw on the day our mother died... A farandole through the history of cinema and a moving reflection on life learning, Au cinéma Central is an intimate book for everyone, filled with enthusiastic nostalgia.
A literary critic for Le Monde and writer, Fabrice Gabriel headed the French Institute in Berlin after serving for five years as cultural attaché in New York, in charge of the French Embassy’s Book Office. He is the author of several books, including Fuir les forêts (2006) and Norfolk (2010).
