Presentation
To understand, to read Sacher-Masoch, one first has to get rid of the ambivalence of Masochism and its former clinical or philosophical interpretations. What remains is a speech, which being is not a clear and conscious self-affirmation, but mumbling. The search for Masoch’s being then becomes a sort of etymological investigation, which resorts to the study of Greek and Latin sources as well to some kind of digressions – about Heidegger or the medieval farce Le Roman de Renart – to approach, like a stratagem of the mind, the Masoch’s riddle. Pascal Quignard develops a speech which is not psychoanalytical, nor structuralist, nor historical, nor Marxist, but which unveils an independent reading. This reading itself is inserted in the flood of literary works, always contemporary to each other, always lost in each other, always being read.
Pascal Quignard wrote numerous essays and novels, among which Tous les matins du monde (1991), Le Sexe et l’effroi (1994) and Les Ombres errantes (Goncourt Prize 2002). L’Être du balbutiement is his first work, published by Mercure de France in 1969. The new edition contains a previously unpublished postface.
