Cafés, etc.
Prix Georges Brassens 2019

Presentation
Trendy or traditional, modern or old-fashioned, either new or old, Parisian cafes are a key feature in the urban landscape. They also are the theatre stage on which scenes of daily life are being played out all the time: casual or pre-established meetings, reunions or separations, in solitude or among the crowd. Anonymous and celebrities pass each other: André Breton is looking for Nadja; Sartre, Beauvoir and Sarraute are working, unknown persons are falling in love, former lovers seem to be mutually unaware…
Didier Blonde, who is sitting at a café table, observes and depicts all those constantly changing people through wonderful anecdotes, with much empathy and great delicacy. Nothing escapes him from the seeming ordinariness of these places where everything is singular and codified: free glass of water, choice between olives and peanuts, chair or bench seat, name of the waiters on the receipt, regular customers at the counter… Celebration of small pleasures, the book of Didier Blonde has kind of captivating charm.
Didier Blonde is the author of several essays and novels, among which L’inconnu de la Seine (2012), Leilah Mahi 1932 (Renaudot Prize 2015 for essays) and Le figurant (2018).
