Presentation
Summer 1984. When the narrator learnt of his young friend Agathe’s death, it is like a blast. The one he knows for six years and with whom he shares a lot can’t have disappeared. But it is true: she was raped and killed in a parking area in Vincennes. No one is better placed than himself to testify on this young girl who used to work and party with him. As he became a writer, his recorders stayed intact: “I was idealizing her – and so what? I’m probably still idealizing her through these lines. It is not a shame to prefer a novel about a reconstructed and temporarily embellished past rather than the sordid of a drama.” It is this novel and this past that Gilles Leroy tells us like a vibrant tribute more than three decades after the events. He is drawing gracefully the moving portrait of a free and living young woman, and depicts an exceptional friendship.
Gilles Leroy is the author of several novels among which Alabama song (Prix Goncourt 2007, translated into 29 languages), Nina Simone, roman (translated into Italian (Gremese), Dutch (Cossée) and Croatian (Filolosko) and adapted to theatre by Jina Djemba “Miss Nina Simone”) and Le diable emporte le fils rebelle.
