“Often we used to come back from the Saturday market with a live duck or rabbit. Once we had one in the bath for a while, because James had understood, from the farmer’s wife that it was ready for eating. We had left with our three-kilo rabbit in our arms. It scratched us as soon as we let go of its ears. We weren’t able to wash for several days, the time it took for us to find some neighbors who could put it to their rabbit clutch: They swore they would not eat it. We also had chicks, a hedgehog, a sick dog with Canine distemper, any amount of small creatures.”
Emmanuelle Guattari grew up under the wide Loire skies, in the clinic of La Borde where her father used to work. In this novel she continues an exploration of her childhood and adolescent memories. Her stories, sometimes moving, often funny, are always full of tenderness and freshness. She paints an intimate painting, where family and biographical details (cousins, uncles, grand-mothers, parents…) are harmoniously woven with landscapes and places, which, like humans, live and evolve over the years...
Emmanuelle Guattari is the author of La Petite Borde (translated into English language (Semiotexte)). Ciels de Loire is her second novel.
