Throughout the centuries, Speech has struggled to bring meaning, generosity, dignity to the act of living. During the Twentieth Century, Nazi totalitarianism attempted to stifle Speech. For the first time in history, it was the focus of a specific attempt at annihilation. This attempt failed but it is essential to reflect on this narrowly avoided peril and understand how Speech is much more then conceptual though. Bringing together studies on Séféris, Breton, Chestov, Kafka, Giocometti, Paul Celan and many others : poets, thinkers, artists whose work was set under the shadow of averted danger, this book initiates a reflection on this subject.
